Fred Guzman is Maui’s man of all seasons and reasons. Possessing one of the most distinctive voices and radio styles on the Valley Isle, he has been a fixture on Maui’s airwaves for 16 years in a wide variety of roles.

In addition to his duties as Program Director for ESPN 550, Guzman also serves as the host of the popular daily talk show ”The SportsPhone“ from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guzman also is know as the Sports Guru from his morning chats with Alakai Paleka on sister station KPOA-FM. He also is Program Director of FoxNews-900, KNUI-AM, hosting a talk show on that station from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. during which he conducts interviews with leading newsmakers.

Guzman spent 20 years as an award-winning print journalist in the Bay Area, covering Super Bowls, Olympics, World Series, NBA Finals, championship fights, Final Fours and numerous events as a columnist and reporter for the San Jose Mercury News.

His ”beats“ included stints as a traveling writer with the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Golden State Warriors and Stanford University football.

He later served as Executive Editor of the Morgan Hill Times, transforming the small-town paper into an award-winning publication and earning individual recognition as an editorial writer and columnist.

Guzman also served as Executive Vice President of the San Jose Earthquakes pro soccer team and, under the same title, was a partner in ProLink, a sports promotions business that staged more than 35 international events featuring teams from more than a dozen countries.

The bilingual native of Puerto Rico and the son of an Army top sergeant, got his first extensive radio experience in the role of color analyst on the Spanish-language broadcasts of the San Francisco 49ers during the team’s glory years.

Guzman began his career on Maui in 1991 and has covered the local news and sports scene ever since. He previously co-hosted a popular morning drive show on KNUI-AM and served as news director for PRG for many years. He’s also is a fixture in election coverage and has hosted a news interview show on local television.

Away from the airwaves, Guzman is a highly successful coach, guiding his high school soccer teams to eight MIL championships and, as a founder of the Maui United Soccer Club, has guided youth and adult teams to numerous state titles and regional tournament appearances.
